Few games in recent years have generated as much buzz pre-release as Grand Theft Auto 6.
As someone who’s played every GTA since the days of Liberty City, I’ve seen firsthand how each new entry changes what we expect from open-world games.
With GTA 6, Rockstar is raising the bar once again. The game is being built exclusively for the newest generation of consoles. So, we can expect faster loading, larger crowds, and environments that feel truly alive.
But speculations and leaks aside, what do we actually know about GTA 6?
My aim here is to cut through the noise and focus on what’s actually confirmed, as well as the most credible insider information.
I’ll walk you through the setting, the main story and characters, what’s shown up in the trailers, and the features we can genuinely look forward to on PS5. With next-gen technology at its core, GTA 6 on PS5 is expected to deliver an unmatched level of realism and scale.
Release and Technical Details: What’s Official
Rockstar has officially announced that GTA 6 will launch on May 26, 2026. The game is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S. There are no plans for a PS4 or older console release.
With GTA 6, every feature, from the sprawling world to the smallest in-game detail, is designed specifically to take advantage of the PS5’s robust architecture.
All of the gameplay footage released in the trailers so far has been captured on the PS5. This is meant to give players a true look at what to expect when the game drops.
The World of GTA 6: Going Beyond Vice City
Rockstar is aiming to deliver a world that’s bigger and more immersive than anything we have seen before. And the setting is a huge part of that ambition.
GTA 6 returns to Vice City, a reimagined version of Miami that many players remember from the 2002 game of the same name.
This time, though, Vice City is just one part of a much larger region called Leonida, Rockstar’s take on Florida.
Key Locations in Leonida
The new Leonida map is more than just an urban sprawl. It blends bustling city life, vibrant neighborhoods, and stretches of wild nature.
The sheer variety on display means you’ll be exploring different cultures, climates, and communities as you go. A few examples are below:

- Vice City
This is the “sun and fun capital of America.” This modern version of Vice City is filled with high-rises, neon lights, and the signature art deco look along Ocean Beach.
- Ocean Beach
The white sand and iconic hotels lining Ocean Beach will give you the perfect Miami vibe. Whether you want to relax or get caught up in action is completely up to you.
- VC Port
This is a major hub for trade and tourism. Naturally, you will find the port to be always busy. Massive cruise ships dock here, and the waterfront is full of activity, whether it’s day or night.
- Grassrivers
Moving away from the city, you’ll find wetlands. These are teeming with wildlife, including alligators and mangroves.
This is Leonida’s version of the Florida Everglades. This is where you can have off-road adventures and unexpected encounters.

- Leonida Keys
As you may have guessed, this place is inspired by the Florida Keys. It features marinas, fishing spots, and laid-back bars like The Rusty Anchor.
- Port Gellhorn
Port Gellhorn reminded me a lot of Sandy Shores from GTA 5. Remember Trevor’s house in the desert town?
Both are rundown, forgotten towns with cheap motels and abandoned attractions. From the looks of it, Port Gellhorn is the grittier, less glamorous side of Leonida.
- Ambrosia
It’s the industrial heart of the map. It’s also home to the Allied Crystal sugar refinery and the territory of the biker gang called Final Chapter.

- Mount Kalaga
The northern part of the map has mountains, dense forests, and even big cats. This area is designed for hunting, fishing, and off-road exploration.
As far as scale and diversity are concerned, the map of GTA 6 truly delivers. With Leonida, you don’t get just a city, but an entire state.
Story and Characters: What We Know So Far
As far as the main story is concerned, Rockstar has done something previously unseen in the franchise.
In previous GTA installments, we have seen the lone antihero or a ragtag group of misfits. However, this time, we’ll find a criminal couple at the centre of the narrative.

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos
Our two playable protagonists are Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. They each bring their own complicated pasts to the table.
Jason is a former soldier who tried to outrun his troubled youth by joining the army. Now, back home, he splits his time between working at the Leonida Marine Centre and running jobs for local drug runners.
Lucia’s story starts fresh out of prison. You can spot her electronic ankle tag in the trailer. The trailer also shows her doing her mandatory community service.
She’s tough, resourceful, and determined to make something of her second chance. And she doesn’t seem to be shy about bending the rules again.
Their journey begins when an easy score goes wrong. That’s possibly what will pull them deeper into Leonida’s criminal underworld.
The game will explore not just their crimes, but their relationship, which is another series first.

Supporting Cast and Plot Hooks
GTA has always had its compelling side characters. In GTA 6, too, there is a cast of colorful and dangerous characters surrounding Jason and Lucia:
- Brian: He is Jason’s landlord and a small-time drug smuggler.
- Cal Hampton: A paranoid friend who always seems to know a little too much.
- Boobie Ike: Strip club owner with ties to the city’s nightlife.
- Roxy and Bae: Luxe—rappers connected to the music scene.
- Dre’Quan: An ambitious music manager.
- Raul Bautista: A reckless bank robber.
As far as we can tell now, the plot will involve a lot of bank heists, running from corrupt police, and risky escapes with stolen cargo.
New Activities, Exploration, and Life in Leonida
In terms of gameplay, there is a noticeable emphasis on both action and daily life.
You’ll have the chance to get involved in a wide range of activities, from high-stakes crime to simple moments of downtime.

Major Activities and Side Hustles
Some of the classic GTA action is back in full force.
Store robberies will let you plan and pull off quick heists. There are underground fighting rings and cage matches that will give you a chance to test your character’s strength and earn respect.
There’s also going to be a gym and workout system, much like what we had in GTA San Andreas. So, you would be able to improve your character’s physical abilities.
Sports, Minigames, and Leisure:
Besides the main story missions and side missions, GTA 5 had a variety of additional content. You can easily put hours into them. We can expect GTA 6 to have the same.
From what we know, you would get to shoot pool, play mini golf, try your hand at fishing, or hit the courts for some basketball.
The game will also reportedly have different water sports like kayaking and scuba diving.
Pets, Homes, and Daily Life:
Trailers and leaks have shown cats, dogs, snakes, lizards, and turtles. This hints at a possible pet system, or at least, more interaction with wildlife than before.
There’s also a working video game console in Jason’s home.
Getting Around and Gear
Moving through Leonida is likely going to be quicker and more varied.
A metro train system seems to offer fast travel between key locations. There are also multiple airports. That may also work as a way to fast travel from point A to point B.
As for vehicles, you’ll have access to cars, motorcycles, bikes, helicopters, airboats, jetskis, and even seaplanes.
Of course, the arsenal is expanding too. Ammu-Nation is now run by series regular Phil Cassidy. It will be stocked with a huge range of weapons.
Trailer Breakdown: What We’ve Actually Seen
So far, Rockstar has released two trailers and a bunch of screenshots from the game. There’s a lot to unpack from these.
We have already talked about much of what we have learned about the world, characters, and plot. Now, let’s touch on some of the finer details that only the eagle-eyed fans have spotted.
For starters, the dynamic weather makes a clear appearance. We can see scenes shifting from bright, sunny days to dramatic rainstorms. But did you know the game may even have extreme weather events like hurricanes?
The last bit is not yet confirmed. What’s certain is that these weather changes will have a huge impact on world-building and gameplay.
The NPCs on the streets and the crowds look more responsive and realistic. The environments are lush with flawless lighting and reflections.

Wrapping Up
Fans have been waiting for GTA 6 longer than almost any game in recent memory. All the delays and rumors have only created more anticipation.
However, the extra time in development means we will likely get something truly groundbreaking.
In the meantime, keep your eyes peeled for more details, deeper looks at gameplay, and new surprises that we will surely get in the months leading up to the launch.
If you’re a PS5 owner, now’s a good time to revisit past Rockstar classics and clear out your console’s storage.
